Jews faced cruel and violent Anti-Semitism in Europe. Anti-Semitism is the hatred or discrimination against jews. Jews in Europe formed a movement called Zionism in the late 1800s. Zionism was trying to turn Palestine into a jewish state because of its historical connection to the reigion. The jews wanted a jewish state so they could have a safe homeland. Anti-Semitism spread in Europe during the Holocaust in World War 2. Over time thousand of jews immigrated to Palestine. The United Nations set out a plan to split Palestine into two seperate states in 1947. The Jews accepted the plan, but the Arabs denied it, and Israel declared independance as a Jewish state in 1948.
Conflicts Between Arabs and Isrealis
Soon, all the tention around Isreal turned into violence. Arab states near Isreal attacked it in 1948. Jews won and gained more land than they would've in the UN plan. They fought a second war in 1956 between Israel and Egypt. After with yet another war in 1967 Israel won and controlled the Jordan River, West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and the Golan Heights. Trying again to regain land once again they attack Israel in 1973 and lost. The United States stepped in and helped create a peace agreement. The treaty got sighned in 1994.
A Reigion of Religion
Israel is seen as a holy place for Jews, Christians, and Muslims. They all believe in and worship the God who made a covenant with Abraham. It's where Jesus lived and died and is a holy land for the Jews. Its also the place where the prophet Muhammad rose to heaven according to Islamic tradition.
